Merriam-Webster has chosen 'pragmatic' (meaning practical and logical) as the word of 2011, due to how often it was looked up on their online dictionary -- particularly before August's debt ceiling vote and during the congressional super-committee meetings. Runners-up include austerity, ambivalence, insidious, didactic, diversity, capitalism, socialism, and vitriol. 12/15/11 2:10pm ET
Given the reason for this year's selection, next year's word is likely to be "impeachment."
A new study to be published in Psychological Science finds that the more attractive a woman is to a guy, the more likely he is to overestimate her interest in him. The study also finds that less attractive guys (based on the women's ratings) are even more likely to think the most attractive women are hot for them, while more attractive men are more realistic. 12/15/11 3:25pm ET

That hand looks way too clean to be one of the protesters.

He was engaged to his girlfriend at the time? Damn, dude. You know you're allowed to just end it, right?

ESPN's annual 'Body Issue' goes on sale today, featuring a number of famous athletes photographed in nothing but their birthday suits. Fortunately, considering all the performance-enhancing drugs the athletes are on, it actually wasn't so hard to hide the naughty bits.
Japan's biggest toilet maker, TOTO, is taking the toilet on the road with its launch of the Toilet Bike Neo, a bike that's powered entirely by human waste. The bike runs on biogas converted from feces that is harvested directly from the driver -- who sits on the bike's toilet-styled seat. The bike also uses residual light imagery to write messages in the air as it zooms by. 10/7/11 1:23pm ET
Hope these things sell. Would hate for TOTO to have to dump them.

Looks like they took the picture of Hope Solo from a PSA about Human Growth Hormone.
After releasing 15 studio albums over 31 years, legendary alternative rock band R.E.M. is calling it quits, telling their friends and fans: ''We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.'' 9/21/11 6:02pm ET
R.E.M. calls it quits? Wow, this website hasn't been updated in a loooong time.
A NASA satellite on the verge of falling back to Earth appears to have begun slowing down and will not re-enter the atmosphere until late Friday or early Saturday U.S. time. The United States is once again an unlikely but potential target for the 26 pieces of the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, expected to weigh from ten to hundreds of pounds each. 9/23/11 3:20pm ET
NASA says the only place they're sure it won't hit is Antarctica. Which means it's definitely heading for Antarctica.
Scientists at the University of California, Berkeley have developed a system to capture visual activity in human brains and reconstruct it as digital video clips. Eventually, this process will allow people to record and recreate their dreams on a computer screen. 9/23/11 12:59pm ET
Currently the only downside is that it makes all people look like Glenn Beck.

Judging from this particular subject's taste in movies, I'm surprised they were able to find any brain activity at all.
Physicists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, think they've spotted neutrinos traveling faster than light, contradicting Einstein's special theory of relativity. According to his E=MC² equation, nothing should be able to go that fast. If true, notes Wired's Adrian Cho, ''it will mark the biggest discovery in physics in the past half-century.'' 9/22/11 7:37pm ET
Next up for the scientists: testing the neutrinos for steroids.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who stars in the new film 'Hysteria' about the invention of the vibrator, has been quoted as saying, ''By the time I finished the movie I'd been sent maybe 15 vibrators.... So I have this incredible collection, and I actually use like one or two of them. I lend them to my friends, and they'll take them for six months at a time.'' 9/23/11 12:22pm ET
Isn't she married to Peter Sarsgaard? Guess he's more Sarsgaard than Peter.

According to a new survey of service charges for 13 U.S. airlines, United and most Continental flights require a $400 fee for checking bags exceeding 71 pounds for international travel, and American tacks on $450 for overweight bags headed to Asia. 9/21/11 3:34pm ET
Damn. Guess I'm gonna have to find a whole lot more room in my rectum.
